Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa or fluid-filled sac that reduces friction in areas where muscle tendons rub over bones. Bursitis produces pain with the movement of joints. It is usually caused by irritation from overuse. It may also be caused by an injury, gout, or rheumatoid arthritis.
