	Percutaneous Disc Nucleoplasty

	Disc hernia can cause a pain when nerve or spinal cord is pinched. This procedure is performed to reduce a herniated disc providing quick relief for most patients. It uses a small needle and modern radiofrequency technology. The procedure is provided on outpatient basis and uses relaxing medication as well as local anesthetic to numb the skin. A thin needle called cannula is inserted into herniated disc. The physician uses a fluoroscope to ensure right position of cannula.

A small catheter-like device is inserted into the disc and sends radio pulses to dissolve small portions of disc nucleus. The spine remains stable. The empty space draws the disc wall back in the needle and device is removed and a small bandage is applied on insertion area. After procedure the patient may required a day of bed rest.

Common side effects could be compared with common injection side effects, i.e. allergic reaction, bacterial infection, bleeding in seldom cases. Steroids side effects are face, eyes, arms, legs swelling, sugar level increasing for diabetic patients.

The patient must inform the physician about pregnancy or if he/she takes blood thinning medication.
